ABOUT TRAINS ... you'll purchase the tickets in Spain

ABOUT TRAINS:
You'll need to buy your train tickets IN SPAIN -- DO NOT purchase them on-line, in advance!  Read on ...

For a substantial discount, you can ONLY buy your tickets in person when you get to Spain.  You will need to get a "Tarjeta Dorada" - Gold Card for over 60 years old - 25% to 40% discount, depending on the day. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, there is a 40% discount. On other days the discount is 25%. The "Tarjeta Dorada" discount card can be bought at Atocha station in Madrid ticket office for 5 euros. People who are not Spanish citizens or residents need to bring passports with them to buy the Tarjeta Dorada. We suggest buying this Tarjeta Dorada (Gold Card) at any point during your stay in Madrid, but you must purchase it before purchasing any train tickets, and then you will show it at the ticket window to get the substantial discount. You can purchase the Tarjeta Dorada AND all the train reservations at one time. (You must purchase the Tarjeta Dorada in person, and cannot purchase it on-line from the US.)
